What is the concept behind Kumo Shabu Sukiyaki at One Belpark?

Kumo Shabu Sukiyaki is a Japanese dining brand established by three Japanese founders living in Indonesia, bringing authentic shabu-shabu and sukiyaki experience to Jakarta. Located at One Belpark Mall, alongside competitive Japanese F&B tenants, the brand required a strong interior identity from day one.

STEKRI Design was entrusted to shape Kumo’s visual and spatial character—positioning it not just as another mall tenant, but as a refined Japanese dining destination with a distinctive presence.

How does the design stand out among other mall restaurants?

In many shopping malls, restaurants rely on overly bright lighting to attract attention. For Kumo Shabu, we chose a different strategy—letting the space speak through architectural expression and materiality.

Since the restaurant is located on the ground floor with outdoor exposure, the entrance needed to maintain cool indoor air circulation without compromising visibility. Instead of using a flat glass façade, we introduced a wide circular pivot door with generous openings, complemented by symmetrical display panels on both sides. This creates a strong “gateway” impression while preserving a sense of exclusivity and luxury Japanese interior design.

What materials and spatial elements define the interior experience?

The interior blends exclusive navy upholstered seating with broken-white walls, dark-toned wood finishes, rocky textures, and warm ambient lighting—creating a cozy yet elevated dining atmosphere.

A triangular ceiling feature becomes the central focal point, visually connecting the perimeter sofa seating with the regular dining tables at the center. Through deliberate flooring patterns, the regular seating area is emphasized to feel equally grand—ensuring no seat feels secondary.

Private VIP rooms are enclosed with semi-sheer partitions inspired by traditional Japanese interiors, while bonsai greenery adds a subtle touch of a Japanese garden, reinforcing the authentic yet contemporary ambiance.
